The Race for Choice
Words cannot express my disgust for the Susan G. Komen organization with the current controversy involving Planned Parenthood and intertwining Republican ideologies of pro-life.
I believe in the right for a woman to choose to have an abortion and I further believe that it is in the best interest of every woman’s health to have access to a breast cancer screening. Planned Parenthood has enabled all women, regardless of their economic situation, to have breast cancer screenings.
This latest right-wing scheme has come at an interesting time since I have been sitting on the fence as to who to vote for in the 2012 election. No, I am not happy with Obama, but I will never allow the government to dictate to me what I can and cannot do with my body. I am a hardcore social liberal. I believe in gay marriage and abortion and I certainly don’t believe the government has the right to impose on those choices in our lives. This latest move by right-wingers has really opened my eyes in this election. Some choices cannot be forgotten or forfeited.
We are not racing for a cure at this point. We are racing for choice. Last time I checked, Roe v. Wade is still very much alive.
Below is the letter I wrote to the Susan G. Komen South Florida Chapter:
Dear South Florida Susan G. Komen Chapter:
As the granddaughter of a breast cancer survivor, I am disgusted. As a former participant in the 2011 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5k in West Palm Beach, Florida who raised nearly $2,000 for the organization, I am disgusted. As the close friend to someone who is currently battling breast cancer, I am disgusted. Yes, I have chosen the word: “disgusted.” Your organization disgusts me.
The current issue with Planned Parenthood is shameful. You endorse protecting women’s bodies for breast cancer research, yet you are cutting funds for breast cancer exams? What you have in essence said is that you don’t support a woman’s right to choose. That is the greatest hypocrisy I have ever heard. I now learned that you donate less than 25% to breast cancer research and finding a cure for this horrible disease. This entire controversy has shed so much light for me as to what your organization truly stands for: greed and ignorance. You misrepresented and lied to so many of us – - friends and family members of victims and survivors as well as the victims and survivors. I wanted to raise money for my close friend for courageously battling cancer and run a half-marathon or a marathon in her honor. Your organization has lost my vote. I also will not participate in any of your future events.
Despite all of this, you continue to send me emails requesting donations with your misrepresented words. I WILL NEVER donate to your organization again. I will never support an organization that lessons the meaning of and distorts the fight for a woman’s body. Susan G. Komen, you disgust me.
